hen one Australian talks about another Australian, all things seem possible.

Five-time 500cc World Champion Mick Doohan paid tribute to MotoGP points leader Casey Stoner this week heading into the Australian Grand Prix on Oct. 16 at Phillip Island, telling Fox Sports Australia that fellow Aussie Stoner could overhaul his career total of 54 premier-class victories.

That math adds up. Stoner, 25, has 31 career MotoGP victories, including eight this season in his first year with the Repsol Honda factory team. It's entirely possible that Stoner could average seven to eight victories per season for the next three years, especially given the rumored stout form of Honda's 1000cc bike in testing.

But Doohan also hinted that Stoner could become the winningest premier-class rider of all time, surpassing Valentino Rossi's total of 79.

Let's assume Stoner has eight seasons left with blinding speed and complete command of his elite skills, riding at the pinnacle until he is 33. He would need to average six wins per season for the next eight years just to catch Rossi, and that's assuming The Doctor never wins again. The Ducati might be a lead sled this year, but the thought of some sort of career winless hex being placed on Rossi as he did to Sete Gibernau in 2004 at Qatar is preposterous. Sure, Rossi currently looks like a soldier who has spent waaaaay too much time in the front lines, but few doubt his ability to win again.

Plus manufacturer dominance in MotoGP is cyclical. Honda is king right now, but it's unlikely that reign of terror will continue without a strong response from Yamaha or Ducati for the next eight years.

Rossi had 42 premier-class wins by the end of the 2004 season, when he was 25. Stoner could end this year with 34 career victories. Time does not favor Casey unless he can produce a string of monster years like Rossi's 11-win seasons in 2001, 2002 and 2005.
